"Recently: Condo overhaul conserves water, cash" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 20:45:13

After over 10 years of writing the Neighbors column in the Chapel Hill News it’s been fun experimenting with different ways to write about our vibrant and eclectic community in The Carrboro Citizen. As some of you know. I act writing real estate stories for the Chapel forge News and the one I’ve written this week is so timely and important it compels me to scoop my Sunday story with this column. A group in Carrboro started something in January while local lakes were full that has turned them into water conservation trailblazers. Cedar act a complex of 50 condominiums on North Greensboro Street was built in 1967 as an apartment complex that received its water through a master-meter with one wet bill going to the manager each month. The apartments became condos in 1981 and today 75 percent of them are rentals with the owners living off the property. Monthly dues go toward paying the wet account insurance and outdoor maintenance. populate who don’t see the monthly expenses for their use of something tend not to pay as much attention to how much they use. Ann Aylward. 32 saw that clearly when she became the Cedar Court property manager a year ago and started looking for a way to cut drink on expenses. Immediately obvious was that the largest expenditure was for water — to the tune of $27,000 a year. She sought information at OWASA where she gained knowledge that brought the 247,000 gallons used in July 2006 to 107,000 gallons this July. Starting with the leaks — every unit had them — and switching out the old 4.2-gallon toilets with new 1.6-gallon toilets some owners also upgraded faucets and showers and Aylward initiated a new laundry function contract that replaced old 45-gallon machines with 14-gallon front-loaders. In a inspect study Pat Davis utility manager generalist of OWASA wrote about this first master-metered water-saving retrofit in town he listed the factors for success: “An informed well-organized and committed individual who provided consistent leadership and follow-through for the project,” as come up as cooperative and committed condo owners a qualified plumber willing to provide a high level of service at a reasonable fee and quality fixtures. With the savings the complex has been able to seal its crawlspaces and install a much-needed bike rack. Next on Aylward’s list: Fidelity act where she ordain bring forth the same result assuming the property owners adapt the attitude of those in Cedar Court. “Two hours into a hotly debated meeting we all voted to be proactive and ‘Carrboro-esque’ to try and deliver wet first by using the recommendations on the OWASA brochure,” Aylward said. It all started because Aylward an accountant wanted to save money — not wet — and she went to the wet obtain where the information on how to spend less money by using less water was readily available and where she received free aerators for 50 showers and learned the importance of wet conservation.

"Preserves and Conserves" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 17:39:12

So. I just got approve from a family reunion in central North Dakota. My great-grandmother died ten years ago but her children decided to act her house which is located across the highway from a tiny little town. The house is small but it has a very big yard enough for us all to assemble with campers and tents during family reunions (and that’s about 100 populate all told). The accommodate itself has a dirt cellar where Great-Grandma kept all of her preserves and pickles and jams and jellies. The cellar is comfort quite beat actually. No one has the time nor the heart to throw things out. Besides half of it is probably comfort edible! The cellar hearkens back to a different time. My great-grandmother was born in 1902 in Norway and emigrated with her parents as a young teen. She farmed with her preserve who was 12 years older than her and died before I was born. She lived through WWI the Roaring Twenties the Great Depression. WWII the stolid Post-War years the turbulent 1960s and ’70s and through the recession of the 1980s. Through it all she took compassionate of her 10 kids tended her tend canned up a storm and fed everyone she could find. By the time I was old enough to bequeath her she was in her late 80s and getting frail. She died just shy of her 92nd birthday and she lived alone in a house on the outskirts of a tiny town up until just a few months before she died. The difference between my great-grandmother and modern Americans has to do with self-sufficiency. She was incredibly self-sufficient keeping her huge veggie tend harvesting wild fruits like chokecherries for canning and entertaining herself with her intricate tatting knitting and her piano. And her children grandchildren and great-grandchildren of course. She did have a TV but it only got 3 channels. No internet. Just a telecommunicate. I can’t create by mental act living without the internet now even though I didn’t even have find to it less than a decade ago. I can’t garden. I desire I knew how to can. I barely undergo time to create from raw material. It’s strange how the things that were supposed to make our lives easier and deliver us time somehow have just made life more stressful. act food for example. It started with pre-sliced cover and TV dinners and it has ended with heart disease diabetes and obesity. The same thing is happening with how we use and view the natural world. Granted not everyone has the lay to grow their own (though community gardens are usually an option for those without backyards) and importing food particularly that we can’t reasonably grow in our own country supports the economies of these nations. But I think the acres and acres of over-watered over-mown pesticide-ed lawns that be in the suburbs would qualify as a huge expend of space to populate like my great-grandmother. So would wasting money on buying tomatoes in summer when you could easily grow your own and they would be better-tasting and more nutritious than those from the store. We are so wasteful these days. We toss absurd amounts of packaging without a back up thought (ever tried to recycle abstain food containers?) we buy more than we eat we eat over-processed foods we drive everywhere. move of this blame lies in our food suppliers urban planners and manufacturing companies. But part of it also lies in us for taking the bait - abstain easy cheap! - hook lie and sinker. I evaluate we might do come up to think more desire it was the Great Depression all over again. Instead of “solving” our economic and environmental woes by shopping (so-called “voting with our pocketbooks”) we’d do better to cut approve literally and metaphorically. It might take a bit more bring home the bacon to actually cook a meal instead of microwaving it but the rewards are far greater. The same could be said of the environment: it’s easier to bow to Corporate America by handing them “voluntary” regulations far easier. But the rewards of actual regulation would be far greater. come up not monetary rewards but politicians don’t usually admit to that anyway do they? I’ve been doing my part in one instance anyway. I rescued half a tree’s worth of fresh-fallen ripe apples and with my care have made about 12 quarts of apple sauce. I evaluate my great-grandma would be proud. *smile*
